Abstract
The authors retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 81 pstients who underwent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy(ESWL) for gallbladder stones. Fifteen patients(19%) were free of stones within 6 months(group A) Fourteen patients(17%)
were
free
of stones between 6 months and l year(group B) Fifty two patients(64%) still had residual fragments l year after ESWL(group C). Size, number, sonographic characteristics, calcification of stones, septation/fold or gallbladder, fragementation
patterns
after ESWL were reviewed on sonography and oral cholecystography to detect the differences in the above findings between the group C and group A & B.
Size patients with delayed. Clearance of fragments(group C) had significantly higher frequencies in sonographic characteristics of non-cholesterol stones, calcified stones, septation/fold of gallbladder, and larger fragments after ESWL than those
of
well passed fragment group(group A & B).
These date indicate that sonographic characteristics, calcification of stones and septation/fold of gallbladder should in the selection of patiente elligible for ESWL, and fragmentation patterns after ESWL may be helpful in prediction of the
outcome of
ESWL.
